How Long Do Preserved Wedding Bouquets Last For?

What bride wants to throw away their wedding flowers? None that we know! It's why more and more happy couples are looking to bridal bouquet preservation.

Yes it's a brilliant way to preserve and cherish your memories, but just how long does a preserved wedding bouquet last for?

It's a great question. And the honest answer is "it depends" - but let us explain very quickly.

  • Air-dried wedding flowers or DIY bouquets will usually last 1-3 years. Colours fade, petals become brittle and the overall look starts to deteriorate. They're lovely for a while, but they end up being quite fragile and vulnerable.

  • Professionally pressed and preserved wedding flowers will last for many years and potentially decades when cared for properly.

Professionally Preserved Bouquets Last Much Longer

At Smart Floral Art, we use a traditional hand-pressing method, followed by careful arrangement and sealing within an airtight frame.

This protects your flowers from moisture, dust and damage, helping them retain their beauty for as long as possible. No harsh chemicals, no artificial treatments - just time, care and expertise.

We started preserving wedding flowers in 2000 (learn more about us), but we expect our preserved frames to last 10, 20, even 30 years+ when kept properly.

What Affects How Long Preserved Flowers Last?

A few key factors make a huge difference to longevity of your preserved wedding bouquet:

  • Sealing and framing - This is absolutely crucial! Airtight, sealed frames protect your flowers from air exposure, which prevents oxidation (the same process that makes an apple turn brown). Flowers left exposed to the indoor environment will deteriorate much faster. Our frames are properly sealed to keep air, dust and moisture out - this single factor will add years and years to your bouquet's lifespan.

  • Light exposure - Direct sunlight is the biggest culprit for fading. Keep your frame away from windows or bright spots and it'll stay vibrant for much longer. But please note that your flowers will naturally fade over time.

  • Environment - Humid or damp conditions (like bathrooms) can impact the flowers over time. A stable, dry environment is ideal.

  • Handling - The less they're touched or moved about, the better they'll last. Once you've found the perfect spot, let them stay there!

  • Quality of preservation - This is the big one. Pressed and framed flowers preserved with proper materials are far more stable than air-dried bouquets sitting in a vase. The difference in lifespan is genuinely decades versus a few years.

Points to note with a natural keepsake

It's worth noting that flowers are organic, so some subtle changes over time are completely normal and actually part of their charm.

Colours are likely to soften slightly as the years go by, creating a beautiful vintage quality - it's a bit like when wooden cladding silvers over time.
